In this session, we'll unveil a faculty-focused framework for designing, developing, and achieving Quality Matters (QM) Certification. Beginning with a Pre-Course Meeting, faculty grasp QM Rubric insights, engage with certified QM courses, and se timelines. Key takeaways: meticulous planning, pre-review, and post-development phases ensure optimal delivery, fostering excellence in online and hybrid courses for faculty and learners.
Engaging instructors in conversations about the quality of course design can be quite challenging. At the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) at Iowa State University, we have created a unique approach to facilitate these conversations and provide a supportive environment for instructors to enhance their course designs. This session introduces the CELT Course Design Institute (CDI), a program that encourages collaboration between instructors and instructional designers.
Large Language Models such as ChatGPT are trained using large amounts of past knowledge including knowledge about course design and quality. This training makes them suitable as a tool to help both identify problems as well as recommend improvements. In this session will explore how to use these tools to perform these tasks through examples from real courses and how they align with the QM Rubric.
An ongoing effort of The Center for Teaching & Learning is to improve the quality of teaching at Governors State University. The primary goal of this initiative is to improve awareness of accessibility to reduce barriers that students may face in courses. The BCA Initiative seeks to resolve challenges with accessibility in online and hybrid courses at GSU. Further, with a focus on Universal Design and QM Standard 8, the initiative will benefit all students, not just those with disabilities.
We primarily use a bichronous approach to providing support and resources for faculty to prepare their courses for official QM review at our institution. We want to reflect and share on this particular approach while offering tips and suggestions for an intensive program with synchronous and asynchronous aspects. Key takeaways include a description of bichronous online learning and opportunities/challenges for this modality in the context of professional development for instructors.
This panel conversation will explore the nuances of how online learning professionals support faculty and curriculum developers with vetting publisher materials. Owing to increased interest in ensuring publisher content meet accepted quality standards, this discussion will examine how e-learning teams provide clarity and guidance for the adoption of high-quality, publisher-created online learning materials and resources.
What if every course at your college started out compliant with QM standards before the faculty even logged in to add their content? What if the course templates baked-in QM and nudged faculty into compliance? That was the star for which our new ID team reached. We will talk about how it went, the implementation process, and how we pivoted when things didn’t go as planned! We will also review a few implementation examples and share with participants a copy of our Canvas course template and talking points for implementing their own university-wide template.
As AI-generated images become more prevalent, online education requires a focus on avoiding the perpetuation of stereotypes and further entrenching biases. This session will show how AI platforms often rely on non-diverse data, resulting in stereotypical media. Participants will learn to identify these biases, use a DEI rubric to evaluate media inclusively, refine AI prompts, and ensure diverse representation in online course imagery.
Online education is transforming rapidly, making high-quality courses essential. Many institutions have rigorous quality assurance processes in place, but these efforts frequently go unnoticed – a phenomenon known as "quiet quality." The purpose of this conversation is to share strategies to effectively communicate your quality assurance efforts at your institution. Don't let your dedication to quality be the best-kept secret - join us and break the silence surrounding quality assurance in online education.
The QM Higher Education Rubric, Seventh Edition, was released in July, 2023, right before AI exploded as a new and impactful technology tool. In this session, join one of the co-chairs of the Seventh Edition Rubric Committee to discuss how AI can be integrated with existing QM Specific Review Standards.
