The College began a three-year, institution-level Quality Matters implementation Plan in 2011, by building QM standards into all aspects of its course development process. The plan included QM-managed course reviews of four model courses, subscriber-managed reviews of 28 courses, internal/unofficial reviews of 120 courses, and a commitment to professional development in PRC, MRC, and face-to-face/online certified facilitation of APPQMR.
In the first phase of the implementation process, 27 of the 41 QM standards were embedded in the course, module and syllabus development templates. Simultaneously, a training team was assembled to conduct in-house workshops in Applying the QM Rubric. The next phase of the implementation plan, constructing a course review system for each level of review, proved to be the most challenging.
Presenters will tell the story of how a QM organizational chart with key constituents evolved and the course review system emerged. The session will cover lessons learned, pitfalls to avoid and strategies for success that assure integrity in the process and buy-in from stakeholders. A visual step-by-step breakdown of each process will be provided. First-hand tales and examples will be shared on various issues, such as designating QM roles and responsibilities, setting up a Quality Matters college-wide committee, tracking patterns in meeting/not meeting standards, revising templates based on “not met” standards, and fixing what may go wrong.
After attending this session, participants will be able to identify keys components of an effective QM institutional implementation plan, to recognize possible pitfalls in the implementation process, and to develop unique strategies for institutional buy-in.
