2017 QM Connect Conference

Exercising Your Brain

This session addresses the question: “What activities can learners engage in to improve distinct brain areas and processes?” Just like endurance, strength, and agility; your memory, perception, and cognition can be improved through exercise. Many of us are fascinated with puzzles such as Sudoku and crosswords. In addition to releasing dopamine, puzzles have been shown to improve specific areas of the brains. In this session, participants will solve different types of puzzles that stimulate distinct brain areas and processes in the broad areas of memory, perception, and cognition.

Pathways to Excellence: Assessing Student Success in Writing

Does your institution struggle with the “best” method to assess student writing? We will compare the processes and results of three methods used to assess student writing at the institution level, including a new LMS tool, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method.Does your institution struggle with the “best” method to assess student writing? To know where you are, it helps to know where you were: why maps are vital for sound assessment

As part of the Quality Talks, this session focuses on quality assessment from the beginning, by way of stressing the importance of well designed competency maps of each program/concentration. Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to: Describe the relationship between curriculum mapping and assessment as it applies to quality assurance of program content.

Mapping the Course Path to QM!

Often, faculty are unfamiliar with instructional design principles and at the same time instructional designers are unfamiliar with course subject matter. As for the students, their question is, “Why am I doing this?”  This session will discuss using course maps to help faculty and designers work together to conceptualize goals for instruction, to help students understand the purpose of course goals and instructional materials, and to design instruction that satisfies QM alignment standards (2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 4.1, 5.1, and 6.1).

How Goldilocks and the Three Bears used Quality Matters to Bolster their Quality Assurance Program

Our university launched several initiatives to improve online education quality including adopting the Quality Matters (QM) standards for online course design, and creation of the Faculty Fellows (2017-2012). Two new initiatives are featured: (1) Quarterly Applying Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) Workshops and, (2) A series of 40 workshops offered weekly focusing on assessment, accessibility and technical skills. The establishment of these categories was created to support a QM based Master Course Template for the Learning Management System. The outcomes of the workshops have been positive.
